WHY YOU FEEL TIRED BEFORE YOUR PERIOD

THE LUTEAL PHASE - NOURISH + NURTURE

If you’ve ever found yourself completely drained in the days leading up to your period—struggling to focus, craving naps, or just feeling “off”—you’re not imagining it. That wave of fatigue is incredibly common, and more importantly, it’s rooted in real biological changes happening in your body.

Let’s break it down.

In the second half of your cycle, known as the luteal phase, your hormones begin to shift. After ovulation, progesterone rises to prepare your body for a possible pregnancy. This hormone has a naturally calming effect—almost like a built-in signal to slow down. While that can feel grounding for some, for many it shows up as low energy, sleepiness, or brain fog.

At the same time, estrogen—often associated with feeling energized, social, and mentally sharp—starts to decline. That drop can leave you feeling less motivated and more easily overwhelmed. Tasks that felt simple a week ago might suddenly require much more effort.

Your body is also doing more work than you might realize. Your metabolism increases slightly, your core temperature rises, and internally, your system is preparing to shed the uterine lining if pregnancy hasn’t occurred. All of this takes energy.

And then there’s the emotional side. Hormonal fluctuations can impact neurotransmitters like serotonin, which influence mood and sleep. This can make you feel not only tired, but also more sensitive, irritable, or withdrawn.

So if you’re feeling exhausted before your period, it’s not a lack of discipline or motivation—it’s your body asking for a different pace.

Instead of pushing through, this is a time to lean into rest where you can. Gentle movement, earlier nights, nourishing food, and giving yourself permission to slow down can make a real difference.

Your energy isn’t constant—and it’s not meant to be.

Understanding that rhythm is the first step to working with your body, rather than against it.

Check out our NOURISH + NURTURE range to see how it can guide you to find your rhythm during the Luteal phase.
